Pillow Talk: Make The Right Bedtime Choices for Beautiful Skin

As Westchester’s skin care experts, we answer a lot of questions about what people can do to keep their complexion looking radiant. A healthy diet, proper hydration, and the use of appropriate sun screen and moisturizing products are all examples of ways to care for your skin on a day to day basis – but what happens after the sun goes down?

It turns out that there are some pivotal decisions you can make as part of your bedtime routine that have a direct impact on how happy and healthy your skin is. To protect your complexion, make sure to do the following each and every night:

Take It Off – Take It All Off!

Just to be clear – we’re talking about your makeup. Cosmetics were never meant to be slept in. Sleeping in makeup can lead to seriously clogged pores and breakouts.  Your eyes and lips are particularly vulnerable to damage when you fail to take your makeup off. Dry, red, irritated and puffy eyes have been caused by prolonged cosmetic wear; broken eyelashes are extremely common. As for your lips, the drying qualities of many lipsticks and glosses can contribute to cracks, splits, and changes in the look of your smile. To keep your lips kissable, make sure to wash your face with a gentle cleanser before going to bed at night.  The SkinCenter team can help you pick the best products for your skin.  If your complexion still needs a pick-me-up even after good routine care, consider a SkinCenter microdermabrasion or chemical peel to exfoliate your skin and give your skin a beautiful glow.

Sleep on a Silk Pillowcase

The odds are pretty good that you’ve heard your hairdresser talking about the benefits of sleeping on silk. Silk is made of very tightly woven, smooth fibers that don’t snag or break your hair. This taut woven texture also retains moisture more effectively than cotton or cotton blend fabrics that wick moisture away; the result is great for dry and brittle hair. That moisture also helps facial skin stay hydrated, which as we all know is key to preventing fine lines and wrinkles from forming.  It’s affordable luxury, prices for silk pillowcases start under $20.

Be Strategic About Bedtime Snacks

The urge to have a little nibble at nighttime is a challenge many of us face. Obviously, healthy snacks are better for you and your skin than sweet treats. If you’re using chewing gum to try to curb the craving for a high-calorie snack, give yourself a time limit of ten minutes – prolonged chewing can lead to the development of facial lines and sagging jowls around your mouth.  If all else fails, consider a SkinCenter dermal filler treatment.  These injectable treatments such as Restylane Lyft, Voluma or Juvederm Ultra Plus address creases and facial volume loss.  Your skin will look rejuvenated with stunning and natural-looking results.
