The Evolution of Hair Removal – From Seashells to Laser Beams

SkinCenter’s new blog series, titled, “The Evolution of Beauty Treatments” continues with the evolution of hair removal. Curious about the history of hair removal and how different methods stack up against modern-day laser technologies? Keep reading below to find out!

WHAT IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Hair removal—otherwise known as depilation and “epilation”—is the intentional elimination of body hair. This includes hair on the face, arms, underarms, legs, back, chest, abdomen, hands, feet, and private areas.

HOW LONG HAVE HUMANS PRACTICED HAIR REMOVAL?

Hair removal has been practiced in various forms— predominantly for cultural, religious, medical or sexual purposes— by nearly all human cultures dating as far back as the Neolithic period (aka the final period of the Stone Age). In other words, hair removal has been around for roughly 12,000 years, and came about during the same era that farming began.

HAIR REMOVAL: THEN & NOW

THEN: The World’s First Tweezers, Razors & Lasers for Hair Removal

In early history, cut and shaved hair communicated that one was of the upper class. Thus, its function was fashion and status—but also cleanliness.

The Ancient Egyptians performed hair removal to treat a common issue in their region—lice. The culture utilized waxing and shaving to remove hair—waxing with caramelized sugar, and shaving with the original straight razor. Moreover, the innovation of the Ancient Egyptians goes one step further with their use of seashells to tweeze unwanted body hair!

Enter: the 20th Century; when lasers were first used for hair removal by successfully targeting and damaging the hair follicles of unwanted facial and body hair. The implementation of laser hair removal treatments meant the absence of unwanted hair for longer periods of time (sometimes permanently). Experimentation concerning lasers for hair removal was performed for roughly twenty years prior to the treatment becoming commercially available in the mid-1990s. From there, laser hair removal became a widely used method for getting rid of unwanted body hair, and is performed in doctor’s offices, medical spas, clinics and even in the home.
